In this project I wanted to explore the balance between negativity and positivity in the news and how this has an effect on society.

This is just a sample of what could be a bigger project. Ideally I would like the words to be bought in real-time through the newsfeed. The society would then react to how negative or positive the news stories are at that particular moment that the user is viewing it.

Twitrratr

Twitrratr is a site that distinguishes between all the positive and negative words from Tweets about a subject. This is particularly good if you want to find out about the general opinion of a product or place etc.

This uses a similar concept as my news clouds project because it highlights and the negative and positive words and categorizes them. The problem with doing this through algorithms is that it cannot make an accurate decision on if the word is being used in a negative or positive way so some of the Tweets are placed in the wrong catagory. The advantages of doing this manually means that humans can make a more accurate decision about what context the words are being used in.

The animation for the Tony Benn project is now completed.

I decided to base it around ‘Letter 3′ from the book Letters to my Grandchildren. Some of the dialogue is taken directly from the book but most of it is from my own research so that the animation explored ideas that i found the most interesting.

The last couple of months I have been researching info graphics in many forms for 2 of my projects, the Tony Benn animation and the Negative/Positive News project. I have bought the book Infomration is Beautiful and I have been following interesting blogs like http://infosthetics.com/ and http://www.coolinfographics.com/

I like the idea of how information can be put into ways that make it visually appealing but still look orderly and clear. I thought it would be interesting to take something that is created from a more emotional and artistic point, then visualize that information using information graphic techniques. The user will then view the information in a different way so that they can come to their own conclusion about it since the graphics will look neutral.

I decided to look at song lyrics to see how they can be turned into infographics. This is my first attempt at setting out lyrics from a very well known song into a set of instructional pictograms..

This is just a rough sketch at the moment. I am not yet sure if i want to redesign this and keep it as a small project or if i want to look further into visualizing song lyrics.

The Tony Benn animation is now 1/3 completed. All of the illustrations and sound clips are now done.

I am happy with how the animation is going in general but I think the dialogue is a bit hard to understand, this may need to either be slowed down or use a human voice instead.
